The Discovery

  • 1961, Caesarea Maritima. Italian archaeologists led by Antonio Frova uncovered a limestone block reused in the steps of the ancient Roman theatre at Caesarea, on Israel's Mediterranean coast. Carved into it in Latin was a dedication naming Pontius Pilate as prefect of Judea.
  • The inscription. The surviving text reads, in part: [Pon]tius Pilatus, [praef]ectus Iuda[ea]e, "Pontius Pilate, Prefect of Judea." The stone records his dedication of a Tiberieum, a structure honoring the emperor Tiberius.
  • Dated to his governorship. Pilate governed Judea from roughly 26 to 36 AD. The stone dates to that window, squarely in the era of the crucifixion.
  • Where it is now. The Pilate Stone is held by the Israel Museum in Jerusalem.

Why It Mattered

  • Skeptics had questioned Pilate's existence. Before 1961, some critics argued Pilate was a literary invention, since no physical evidence of him had been found. The stone ended that argument: his name and title, carved in stone, by his own administration.
  • Corroborated by ancient writers. The Jewish historian Josephus (Antiquities 18.3) and the Roman historian Tacitus (Annals 15.44) both describe Pilate's role in Judea, including his ordering of Jesus' execution. The stone confirms the man behind those accounts held exactly the office the Gospels describe.
